Interior designer and former colleague toni mckeel helped lay out the kitchen based on amy s list of core elements.
1920 kitchen flooring. To combat this varnishes were reformulated with resins to improve hardness durability and cure time. So wow that when i posted it on instagram the vintage gal commented that it would be a fantastic pattern for an outfit and i00 have to agree with her. On site they have an adorable 1940s cottage with the most amazing original flooring from the 40s in their kitchen. The flooring was linoleum and just look at the pattern wow.
Invented in england in 1864 by frederick walton linoleum began to catch on in the 1880s. Notice the use of white enamel and white fixtures with pastels early in the decade and contrast that with the shift toward bright primaries and lots of color including fixtures and appliances as the decade ends. They are used under a wide variety of floor coverings such as ceramic and natural stone and can be installed on concrete or plywood. The predecessor of vinyl tile was asphalt tile first available as 9 x 9 squares in the 1920s.
The earliest cork floor tiles were installed later around 1900. Starting in the 1920s manufacturers pasted these tiles onto 12 inch square paper backing to make them easier to lay. Printed linoleums became popular known as art squares from 1905 through the 1920 s and later. Linoleum is still made using the original formula which includes cork and linseed oil.
As they are today ceramic tiles were a common flooring choice in 1930s kitchens but the tiles were typically small and arranged to create a mosaic pattern. Especially popular in the 1920s and 1930s pinwheel tile patterns are a simple and fun design. By the late 1920 s wood floors started to have major competition from linoleum floors which offered far less maintenance and hassle. That was homeowner amy pelly s intention as she approached redesigning the kitchen in her 1925 seattle bungalow.
Classic checkerboard flooring a vintage stove and sink and period cabinets. They were rarely any other color than the standard white with a black center but on a rare occasion you might find a dark blue tile in the center of the pattern. Installing a heated floor system is the energy efficient choice. Below are a few samples of linoleum from a 1914 15 catalogue from a scottish linoleum company world wide suppliers of linoleum showing a range of printed linoleums suitable for kitchens.
Between 1900 and 1920 most houses in cities and towns were connected to the municipal water system which made life in the kitchen a lot easier. And the advent of gas ranges meant that at least for some homeowners the days of slaving over fires in hot wood or coal stoves were over.
